Excellence means when a man or woman asks of himself more than others do – José Ortega y Gasset
This is true of all those who wear their leadership well: that they push themselves harder. They give more than the others do. They hold themselves to higher standards, while also demanding the same of you. They stretch themselves not because it would impress others, but they do it for themselves. They’re willing to do what it takes. And they make it look effortless.
If you’re aspiring to lead a kitchen, remember that you will show everyone the way: how to do, how to behave. You will map out where the team are going. You will hold a space for others to grow into their capabilities. You will decide how to respond to a setback.
Do you see why the basis for selection into leadership is a commitment to your own excellence?
It might sound onerous. But also remember, excellence can also be a leveller. No matter what your circumstances or how unfair the world of employment might appear to you, your excellence gives you a chance to show up as your best self. And in a world where most people choose mediocrity and an easy life, you will shine brighter than the rest.
Also know that chasing excellence is not the same as chasing perfection. You’re simply doing the best you can in every action and thought, in every moment. And have fun with it. That’s when it takes less effort.
Do this: commit to your excellence from this very moment onwards. Prepare for a brighter future.
