Joining in the staff meal was one ritual that I never wanted to compromise on for a number of motives besides hunger. Firstly, of course it is really gift having someone cook fresh food for you (in many other professions you take a packed lunch to work) and there’s a real charm to those simple, put-together meals. I was pretty grateful and never complained. And most of all, I enjoyed bonding with everyone else on the team.
Christmas is a different story and on some days my ritual became just eating a tiny plateful, while on my feet. But even that little bit of honouring myself meant that I had much more to offer – at least I went back to work with a better ‘quality’ of presence. And it all shows up in the food you cook. So make sure you honour yourself every day for the next few weeks and grab a small plateful at every staff meal.
