Although we don’t talk enough of the sacrifices that being a chef requires us to make, we talk even less about what some of us have sacrificed to find a better work-life balance. I know chefs who have scaled down their career ambitions, risked setting up their own ventures and a few who have walked out of the industry, giving up what they loved to do altogether.
None of these are easy choices to make. It’s not easy going against the grain or blazing your own trail when the industry holds only one model for what success looks like.
This post is simply to honour you if you’ve had to make that tough decision of choosing yourself first, chef.
