looking-the-part

In last week’s Team Dynamics post, we looked at what it means to be a leader. There are so many aspects to leadership but this is overlooked by many who aspire to climb the ladder: looking the part.

Are you showing up as a leader even while you’re waiting to be picked for a promotion or to be given more responsibilities? Because most of the time it’s those who display leadership qualities that are offered opportunities. And that doesn’t mean that you have to boss your teammates around to be seen as a leader.

It starts with being willing to follow. From taking the initiative. Saying yes to things that no one else wants to do. Finding new ways to do things. Being available not only when it’s convenient to you. Connecting easily with everyone on your team. Being able to see the bigger picture as well as the details. Taking an interest in all aspects of the work. Being humble enough to learn from someone else. Commanding your own self to excel.

And you know what? Sometimes it’s as simple as showing up to work everyday in clean, fitting, neatly-pressed chefs whites.

You don’t have to play a role. When you’re truly aligned with what you want, you’ll find yourself modelling those who you admire. Picking up behaviours and ways of doing and being. Simply set an intention of wanting to lead a kitchen someday. It all begins there, chef.
