On one hand, there are people are taking away the dignity of refugees and immigrants. On the other, these two gentlemen: one from a family displaced by war and the other born to immigrant parents, have deservedly conquered the world. Without getting into a politics-related discussion, I want to use this example to again emphasise how damaging labels can be.
What truths are we not seeing about those in our industry because we can’t get past the label we’ve given them? Whether it’s young chefs or female chefs or waiters or any other group of people, don’t our minds tend to make up limiting stories about how they might act and behave? What if we gave them a chance to be all of who they can be?
