This seems like a good week to talk about the beautifully-made movie Roma. My great hope is that as “life imitates art”, this will lead to a trend of those of us in service professions finally being seen and appreciated by the rest of the world for what we do.

For me, two moments define the movie: the first is when Cleo has the opportunity to imagine a different life for herself, but she can’t bring herself to accept it. (She’s also not helped by her circumstances and probably the larger social/economic/cultural conditions of the time).

But the most heartbreaking moment in the movie is when she comes to that realisation and deeply regrets it.

This is the paradox for all of us who serve – that we lose ourselves in that service and completely lose sight of who we are. And this is precisely why #BetterCheflife exists: to help you lead with your vision for your life, chefs.
