being-present
Do you connect with the food you’re cooking?

Yesterday we talked about how being present can actually give you more time in the kitchen.

So, how do we go about being present? Here’s a simple fix – and it doesn’t require any drastic action on your part. All it takes is a bit of self-awareness. Ask yourself: are you connected to the food you’re cooking?

You’re answer might be no: I’ve been stressing over the length of my prep list. I’ve got to remember to take the trays out of the oven. I’ve been wondering what the point of today’s meeting was. I’ve had to watch the new chef on the team to make sure he doesn’t mess up. I’ve been so bored with this endless task that I kind of drifted off.

When you’re aware of your thoughts wandering in every direction but the task you are performing, gently guide your attention back to the food you’re cooking. Your true genius as a chef is to bring the best out of the food. That’s what deserves your attention from moment to moment.

That’s your real work, is it not?
